Interpretation Program Assistant (Summer 2018)

Assist the Interpretation Department in providing a reliable schedule of accessible and engaging Drop-In Activity programming throughout the Museum's exhibit halls and program spaces, including the Suit Cabot Lab. Engage visitors in hands-on activities that encourage them to use skills of science inquiry, engineering design, and mathematics (STEM). Assist staff in training, mentoring, and supporting the Summer Youth Volunteers and Interns. Assist with the daily operation of the Exhibit Interpretation program, including activity setup and cleanup support and providing volunteer breaks. Help develop and document program activities and maintain activity spaces and materials.


  • Facilitate Interpretive activities with the general public and school audiences in the exhibit halls, Suit Cabot Lab, or specific temporary exhibit for 2 – 4 hours each
  • Learn a minimum of 2 programs in the first week and an avg of 1 program each 1-2 weeks thereafter.
  • Assist in the maintenance and refurbishment of interpretation activity materials and spaces as needed.
  • Participate and assist in the training of 8-12 Interpretation Summer Youth Volunteers and up to 4 Summer Youth Inters.
  • Assist Interpretation Staff with support of up to 10 volunteers per shift.


This position is temporary part-time, 28 hours a week, with a start date around June 5th, 2018 through September 3rd, 2018.

  • Ability to read, write, understand English; basic math.
  • 6 or more months of Museum of Science education programs experience.
  • Demonstrated oral and nonverbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate STEM content in programming for audiences of 2 – 30 people
  • Demonstrated coaching skills to help participants successfully achieve activity or program goals


Non-Exempt (Hourly).
