Media Relations Manager

Reporting to the Marketing Director, the Media Relations Manager is responsible for planning and implementing external communications strategies that proactively manage the Museum of Science's image and reputation with key local, regional, national, and international audiences, including the media, general public, educators, public officials, and science/technology industry. The Media Relations Manager measurably supports the Museum's initiatives with the goals of increasing awareness and creating/reinforcing positive perceptions to help drive attendance and public support of the institution. Initiatives include promotion of the overall Museum and its mission, its product portfolio (exhibits, programs, and curriculum), visibility of its thought leaders, advocacy efforts, crisis communications, and more.

The Media Relations Manager works collaboratively across the organization to ensure tight strategic and tactical coordination of all media and public relations activities (outreach efforts, content, calendaring) with other marketing channels and the overall organization to maximize impacts. This position manages media relations staff and external public relations agency and ensure that all activities ladder up to overarching institutional objectives. The role also works proactively to identify opportunities to attract new, diverse audiences through special events, discounts, and other offerings.


  • Develop, implement, and maintain an overarching corporate media and public relations strategy for the Museum that supports the Museum's mission – building awareness and positive perceptions of the entire Museum portfolio (museum, curriculum products, exhibits and more) among the media, general public, and industry contacts.
  • Lead efforts to heighten the Museum's media profile by developing and implementing strategies for outreach and relationship development to approximately 2,000 media contacts, growing our impact locally, and expanding our footprint nationally and internationally.
  • Oversee the production and distribution of a wide variety of media relations department content including editing and approvals of ~100+ press releases, alerts, media advisories, fact sheets, press packages, bios, position statements, op-eds, articles, and other communications on an annual basis.
  • Oversee the execution of 20+ public and/or press events that drive coverage for exhibits, films, planetarium offerings, themed weekends, fundraising efforts, and more.
  • Proactively pitch stories to media outlets; oversee and/or respond to 5 to 10 daily incoming requests from media.
  • Manage departmental activities including management of one to three direct reports, agency management, budgeting, and reporting with a focus on building out new processes and procedures to support long-range objectives and measure impact.


This position is full-time, 40hrs/wk, Monday-Friday


Director, Marketing


  • Bachelor of Science or Arts and additional course work.
  • 10 or more years of Media Relations, Communications, PR, Marketing, English, or related experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of media and media strategy, public relations, crisis management and executive and organizational thought leadership development.
  • Demonstrated expertise managing media relations/earned media and external communications for a major corporate brand or large non-profit, including management of third party agencies and other partners.
  • Proven experience launching new products and raising brand visibility locally, nationally through collaboration with marketing partners and support of integrated campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability writing and editing press releases and other related communications (opinion pieces, articles, etc.)
  • Management experience including long range planning, supervisory experience and budget planning.
  • Previous experience delivering media coaching/training to senior level executives.


Exempt (Salaried). Commensurate with experience.
