The Membership Director is responsible for bringing the Museum's mission - "to inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone" - to life in compelling ways that create belonging, reward affiliation, build community and create deep relationships. The Museum of Science's industry-leading membership program drives a critical portion of earned revenue, serves as an important connection to the community, creates a pipeline for future donor engagement and enables Museum ambassadors to spread the word about the Museum's offering. This position plays an important role in stewarding those relationships by overseeing the Museum's $6 million membership program in collaboration with Chief Marketing Officer. The Senior Director develops budget and revenue forecasts and the acquisition, engagement, and retention strategies to meet the annual revenue and sales goals. They serve as both the department leader and an organizational catalyst for change by supporting a data-driven culture, influencing the guest journey from visitor to member to donor, and expanding the membership audience and benefit suite to incorporate digital experiences. In addition, this role helps us achieve our value of increasing community accessibility to the Museum through oversight of free and low cost programs such as the Library passbook program and the Wonderfund initiative. Combined, these efforts present the Museum's value proposition to expand reach, deepen relationships and increase impact with our most important ambassadors.


  • Developing and stewarding strategic plan that supports the Museum's 2030 vision
  • Creating a new digital membership model that radically expands the scale, audience and definition of membership value
  • Developing and stewarding a customer journey that is inclusive of on- and off-site (digital) engagement
  • Managing annual membership audience of 30,000 - 50,000 households
  • Delivering annual revenue goals of $4 million to $6 million+, approximately 11% of the Museum's operating budget
  • Managing expense budget of up to $1 million
  • Managing staff of up to 5 full time employees
  • Managing conversation rates that deliver 30% of our visitors and $400k in ticket revenue per year
  • Creating and executing approximately 8 member events per year
  • Partnering on 4-6 major digital initiatives per year
  • Managing 300+ participating libraries in the passbook program driving 61k visits and $900k in ticket revenue per year
  • Managing the auto-renewal process to deliver 35%+ renewal rate with over 50% of members enrolled in One Step.
  • Delivering over 1 million emails and 800k direct mail pieces to drive acquisition, retention and engagement.
  • Managing 1-3 volunteers

Chief Marketing Officer


  • Bachelors of Science or Arts degree.
  • 10 or more years of marketing, membership or advancement experience
  • Strong background in membership programs or similar relationship-based marketing/customer loyalty program.
  • Experience developing and overseeing execution of renewal and acquisition campaigns, including mail, email, telemarketing, and digital strategies.
  • Experience with customer relationship management, including fulfillment, stewardship, events, and service.
  • Deep understanding of databases and CRM systems
  • Proven experience using data to drive informed decision making and measurably improve results
  • Experience building segmented membership communication strategies
  • Experience with all aspects of marketing communications, including print, email, and web-based components.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage a budget, forecast sales, and have full responsibility for P&L.
  • Experience managing and providing leadership to a marketing team.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills.
  • Experience with customer service
  • Creativity, ability to manage projects, meet deadlines, and monitor and evaluate program performance.


Exempt (Salaried). $121,000 - $126,000 / year

Staff, interns, and volunteers will be required to show proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
