The Government Relations Officer is responsible for securing $1-2 M per year in government grants to support a wide array of initiatives working with stakeholders from across the Museum to create compelling proposals for program, exhibit, curricula, and capital funding needs. With guidance from the Director of Government Relations, this position will help grow the Museum's new, inclusive government relations strategy by assisting with the Museum's Federal, state, and local government relationship building, advocacy, and lobbying efforts. The Government Relations Officer will also support state and local advocacy efforts to fund EiE and MOS at School outside of Massachusetts.


  • Raise $1-2 M per year from government sources, pending budget allocations and funding levels.
  • Identify opportunities, write, and edit full competitive government grant proposals, roughly 8-10 proposals for a variety of Museum programs, exhibits, and curricula annually.
  • Assist with the Museum's Federal, state, and local government relations, including grants, earmarks, and other sources of revenue as well as any relationship building, advocacy, and lobbying efforts by developing 4-5 proposals annually.
  • Advocate in support of the Museum and its exhibits, programs, and curricula by meeting with up to 20 Federal, state, and local government officials and staff. Schedule and prepare materials and provide follow up for these meetings.
  • Write, and edit materials for state and local government advocacy efforts to fund EiE and MOS at School outside of Massachusetts, roughly 5-6 proposals annually.
  • Execute high-level stewardship for 3 selected Museum government donors.


This position is full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday.


Director, Government Relations


  • Bachelors of Science or Arts degree.
  • 2 or more years of government relations experience.
  • Demonstrated experience writing government grants or experience in building relationships, advocacy, and lobbying efforts with government officials
  • Demonstrated communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work consistently towards key submission dates
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with both external donors, government officials, and staff and internal colleagues


Exempt (Salaried). $65,000-$70,000/year.
