Education Associate I, Interpretation

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Collaborate with the Interpretation team to provide hands-on learning experiences for Museum visitors throughout the Museum's exhibit halls and program spaces. Facilitate Drop-In Activities with visitors in the Exhibit Halls, Temporary Exhibits, and Hands-On Laboratory. Assist with the daily operations of Interpretation programs, including planning and delivering daily briefings for volunteers and staff, making activity schedules, assisting with program set-up and clean-up, maintaining materials and spaces, and training part-time staff and volunteer interpreters. Develop, design, and produce interpretation activities and materials that support visitor exploration of exhibit themes and messages and encourage visitors to use the skills of scientific inquiry and engineering design. Assist with support of other Education and Enrichment Programs as needed.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Spend an average of 12-14 hours/week facilitating Education and Enrichment Programs in exhibits and program spaces, with up to 35hrs/wk teaching summer courses.
  • Learn a minimum of 2 - 3 programs in the first month and an average of 1 program each month thereafter
  • Assist Program Manager and Coordinators in training and supporting up to 5 part-time staff and up to 60 volunteers.
  • Oversee set-up and clean-up of 1 to 2 programs daily.
  • Take primary responsibility for maintaining materials and spaces for one of 3 program areas, including the Exhibit Halls, Temporary Exhibits, or the Suit-Cabot Lab.
  • Develop or assist with the development/improvement of 3-6 activities/yr for Interpretation department programs
  • Assist the Interpretation team in developing weekly briefing topics and delivering 2 briefings daily.
  • Work one regular weekend day and/or Friday night and some holidays and extended hours as required


WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is grant-funded, full time, 40 hours/week, Tuesday-Saturday.


REPORTS TO:

Manager, Education Programs


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors of Science or Arts degree preferred
  • One (1) year or more of science, archaeology, engineering, or education experience
  • Experience delivering educational programming in an informal education setting
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate science content in programming
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in teams


STARTING SALARY:

Non-Exempt (Hourly). Commensurate with experience.
